How to Layer Necklaces

One of our favorite ways to express ourselves is through our jewelry (duh!) Whether it's rings, bracelets, or necklaces, our motto is the more, the better. Jewelry is a great way to share your personality and enhance your confidence with every step. And one of the trendiest yet classiest ways to wear jewelry is by layering necklaces. Layering can help you add some spice to your final fit without overdoing it. And depending on how you layer can change the entire vibe of an outfit.

Layering necklaces is a trend that has been around for some time - and for good reason! Why stop at one necklace when this look gives you two, three or four times the opportunity to express your own personal style?! While we love a single-chain necklace, the layering effect can simultaneously offset and enhance the other necklaces that are being worn at the same time.

What to consider when layering necklaces?

There is no particular rule for how to layer your necklaces, but we do suggest thinking about the following; either go for a look with necklaces all in the same material, or for a more unique and individual look, you can pair unlikely and different materials together for a harmonious 'clash.'

If you're sticking to the same material, let's say gold, adding different textures, chains, and pendants creates a rich, textural, and somewhat sentimental look when layering necklaces.

Elevating your wardrobe or switching up your style can be as easy as reevaluating your accessories. The first step is to take inventory of the pieces you have and think about how you currently wear them. Next, you'll want to consider the trends and what you gravitate towards. For example, if you have a collection of chains and stranded pendants you'd normally wear one at a time, learning how to layer necklaces might be the key to updating your look.

The stacking necklaces trend, which is still going strong, begs the question: Why wear one when you can wear multiple? Still, laying necklaces isn't always as effortless as it seems. These types of accessories seem to tangle together just sitting in a jewelry box, let alone swinging around a neck all day long. So what's the secret to making them stay in place and look as perfectly layered as they do on Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber?

Your shortest necklace is your foundation - Everyone has a certain necklace length that's most flattering, so it's important to test a few lengths and see which one works best for you.

Once you have that base, think of it as the foundation on which you can layer up.

You may keep it 2 inches apart for something more subtle, or go super long with the second length for a dramatic look. For example, say you choose a 12", 14", and 16" necklace. This will have a symmetrical and cascading-like effect. Any way you go, having that foundation is a great place to start.

Chain Type and Placement Matter

When layering three necklaces, you want attention to go to the top and bottom necklaces, adding that the middle chain should be something clean and simple. If you choose to include only one pendant, make that the longest.

I love staying between two or three necklaces, but depending on the day, outfit, or mood, I'll switch it up and add as many as I want. The best part about jewelry and style is that it's subjective, and what looks good is attached to confidence. Sure, we can tell you the "best practices," but only you know what looks good on you and what makes you feel the most you.

At Eleven18, all our necklaces range between 12-inches to 18-inches with a two-inch extender. This allows you the space to be creative with the pieces you have.

Here are a few of the necklace stacks we love and find inspiration from every day.
